Course Description

This nationally recognised qualification provides foundation skills in computing and employment to get you started or re-started in your career.

After learning how to operate a personal computer, you will be guided through the use of various computer packages, learning how to work effectively in an IT environment.

You will also learn about workplace communication, safe work practices and other useful things that blend with a variety of other course outcomes, no matter what your profession or longer-term career aspirations are.

This course is a great place to get started if you want to develop better than average technology skills for your profession or as a small business operator. It is also the starting point if you want to take the IT sector seriously and go on to specialty IT streams at higher levels.

How much experience is enough to meet the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. Applicants must be able to demonstrate competency in basic written and spoken English.

You will need to be comfortable operating a computer such as saving files and creating folders. Some basic ability to use a word processing program will be of assistance. Internet access is essential.

What happens if I fail a unit?

The teacher will provide feedback that will let you know if you have not met the requirement. You will be asked to resubmit your assessment.

In the course how many assignments will there be?

The number of assignments varies from unit to unit – generally two to four for each unit, so upwards of 20 small assignments.

What specific types of assignments are in the course?

Theory based assignments, case studies and written reports. Most of the assessments are practical that require you to demonstrate the skills you have gained from the learning.

At a minimum, what equipment and software is required?

• An internet connection with a reasonable speed and modern browser
• Microsoft Office 2003 or above or a similar Office program such as Open Office
• Adobe Flash player
• Adobe Acrobat Reader
• Microsoft Office 2010 with Access or later (Open Office is acceptable) (iWorks and Filemaker for Mac is suitable)

Will I need to buy any text books or other stuff for this course?

No there are no workbooks for this course – all your required resources are available online. Printed workbooks are not appropriate for this course as the exercises contain numerous links to other websites.

What happens if I finish the course in 6 months and have paid the 6 month fee, will there be any more fees to pay?

No.

What happens if I need to take 6 months off in the middle of the course? Can I get my study suspended and then start again in 6 months?

No. You will have paid for the full course (up to 12 months) so that is how much time you have to complete the course.
